Powerful and sultry Co-Lead Singer with Pink Martini Featured This Week at TSO’s Final Pops Concert for Season

By Dennis Kucherawy

Storm’s back in town and she’s living “large.”  That’s Storm Large the singer not Stormy Daniels, the Donald Trump swinger.

And her concert titled “Love, Lust and Rock & Roll” certainly steamed up staid Roy Thomson Hall for her opening night with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO), the first of a four-performance engagement conducted by Steven Reineke.

Large, who made her TSO debut in October 2015, unleashed her dynamic, four-octave soprano range in a program that ranged from a dark, reimagining of a Cole Porter classic “I’ve Got You Under My Skin, a torch-song reinterpretation of Olivia Newton John’s “Hopelessly Devoted to You” from the movie Musical “Grease,” to classics by Queen “Somebody to Love” and Elton John’s “Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road” and her seductive performance of “Skyfall,” the theme from the James Bond movie, a smash hit for Adele.  The TSO’s performance of the latter prompted Large to compliment the musicians’ talent in replicating the recording’s sound, especially its big brass.

Keeping with the program’s theme, the concert began with the Prelude and Aragonaise from Bizet’s “Carmen Suite No. 1,” an appropriate thematic choice as Carmen is one of opera’s sexiest and sultriest characters.  Large then swept onstage with her four-piece band “Le Bonheur.”  She was dressed in a stunning black evening gown with a seductive décolletage that plunged towards her navel and slits that revealed her glamorous legs.  Tattooed on her bare back seemed to be the word “Large” with an illustration.

She picked up a ukulele and strummed it as she sang a song she wrote titled “Call Me Crazy,” one of what she joked were her “creepy, insane, stalker” compositions about the nature of obsessive love.

After the intermission, Large continued her glamorous ways, wearing a shimmering, dark green cocktail dress that the audience loved judging by its applause and whistles.

Large is likely most famous as China Forbes’ co-lead singer with the popular, internationally flavored orchestra/band Pink Martini.  (She appears on its album “Get Happy.)  She leapt to fame in 2006 as a finalist on CBS TV’s “Rock Star:  Supernova.”  She now tours with her band as a featured guest with symphony orchestras throughout North America.

Following Tuesday night and today’s (Wednesday’s) matinee, Large and the TSO perform again Wednesday night and tomorrow (Thursday) evening.
