“Angels in America’s” Tony Kushner

This Monday, June 12th at Isabel Bader Theatre (University of Toronto)

By Dennis Kucherawy

As Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-Winning drama “Angels in America” plays to sold-out audiences at London’s National Theatre in a 25th-anniversary production there, he returns to Toronto next week for an evening of discussion.  Kushner will deliver a lecture that will be followed by a Question and Answer session moderated by Chris Glover of CBC Toronto.

Among his other work is “A Bright Room Called Day,” “Homebody/Kabul,” the musical “Caroline, or Change,” and screenplay adaptations for Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” and “Lincoln” that were both nominated for Oscars.

The New York Observer called “Angels in America” “one of the greatest plays of the 20th century.”  The present National Theatre production is led by Tony and Olivier Award-winning director Marianne Elliott, who is celebrated for her imaginative and brilliant work on the international hit plays “War Horse” and “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” The stellar cast includes movie star Andrew Garfield (“The Amazing Spiderman 1 & 2,” “Hacksaw Ridge”) as Prior Walter, Nathan Lane (“The Producers”) as Roy Cohn and Olivier Award-winning Denise Gough (“People, Places, Things”) as Harper Pitt.

Cineplex theaters across Canada will premiere the NT LIVE broadcast of the production on July 20th (Part One – “Millennium Approaches”) and July 27th (Part Two – “Perestroika.”)  Encore presentations begin August 5th.  “America in the mid-1980s. In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell,” as NT LIVE describes the play.

“An Evening with Tony Kushner” is part of Pride Toronto’s Queer Icon series.
