“Come From Away,” (CFA) the Canadian-developed musical that’s now a hit on Broadway, has received eight Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations including Best New Musical/Opera and Outstanding Production.”


Set in Gander, Nfld. when planes were forced to land at its airport following the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 in New York City, CFA was welcomed on Broadway with critical and popular acclaim.  It also has received seven Tony nominations including one for Best Musical.  The Tony awards will be held Sunday, June 11th.

The Toronto engagement of the musical “Matilda” tour received six nominations including Outstanding Production and Outstanding Performance – Male for Dan Chameroy, a Best Supporting Actor recipient recently at the Toronto Theatre Critics Association Awards.

Soulpepper Theatre led in the general theatre company with 23 nominations including eight for its production of “Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts I, II and III).”

The Canadian Opera Company received 27 nominations for five of its productions including eight nods for “Gotterdamerung.”

Among special awards, arts producer and administrator Mitchell Marcus of The Musical Stage Co. received the Leonard McHardy and John Harvey Award, for “his exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to Toronto’s arts and culture landscape,” said the Doras’  news release.

Also, the Audience Choice Award is now renamed in honor of the “beloved, long-time NOW magazine theatre critic.”

The Doras honour Toronto’s theatre, opera and dance communities.  This year, nominators considered 210 productions by 120 companies representing the 2016/17 season.  The awards ceremony, hosted by actor/musician Raoul Bhaneja, will take place Monday, June 26th.
