All-Star Festival Cast to Perform for Stratford’s 2017 Kiwanis Festival of the Performing Arts

Canadian Broadway Star Chilina Kennedy to Sing Songs from Toronto-bound smash hit show “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’”

By Dennis Kucherawy

“The birds are singing it is Sondheim.”

-      Apologies to the Gershwins and their song “Swanee”

Yes, this Sunday is the much anticipated annual Parade of the Swans, when the gorgeous birds are released from their winter lodgings on Morenz Drive.  Accompanied by the skirl of the Stratford Police Pipes and Drums Band, they will march/waddle along Lakeside Drive and North Street and then leap into the Avon River in all their feathery glory.

Later that evening, Sondheim may actually be heard at the second annual Broadway Blitz, a fundraising concert featuring performances by a gifted cast of veterans from the Stratford Festival. The beneficiary is the 2017 Stratford Kiwanis Festival of the Performing Arts.

From the Festival’s production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” will be bass-baritone Marcus Nance (Caiaphas), Mike Nadajewski (Peter) and Chilina Kennedy (Mary Magdalene,) returning to Stratford after two years starring on Broadway in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.”  She will sing numbers from the Toronto-bound show.  Chilina joins the national tour here in June for an almost nine-week long engagement before returning to Broadway.

(In “Superstar,” Mike as Peter and Chilina as Mary Magdalene sang the hauntingly lovely `Could We Start Again, Please?’  They may sing it Sunday night.)

Other performers will consist of Cynthia Dale, Barbara Fulton, Valerie Hawkins, Glynnis Ranney, Shane Carty and Alexis Gordon.

Janis Auster, Executive Director of the Kiwanis Festival, said the performers will sing solos, duets and trios.
