“The Last Wife” Launches Exciting Soulpepper 2017

Season

Includes Stratford Festival Hit Featuring Original Cast and Director

By Dennis Kucherawy

Everything old is new again at Soulpepper Theatre as it announced the first three plays of its 2017 season – two of its hits and a revival of a Stratford Festival world premiere hit play from August 2015.

A public and critical hit that enjoyed an entirely sold-out engagement, Kate Hennig’s “The Last Wife” was extended three times. In her debut play, she establishes a contemporary setting to tell of the “compelling” relationship between King Henry VIII and Katherine Parr, the last of his six wives.  It begins previews January 20th and runs until Feb. 11th.  Opening night is Jan. 24th.

“Sex, violence and women’s rights shape a humorous and powerful contemporary take on the tumultuous relationship that sculpted a dynasty,” says Soulpepper’s press material.

Alan Dilworth, Soulpepper Associate Artistic Director, and director of “The Last Wife’s” Stratford world premiere, leads the returning original cast of Maev Beaty, Sara Farb, Jonah Q. Gribble, Gareth Potter, Bahia Watson and Soulpepper Founding Member Joseph Ziegler.

Next, is Ins Choi’s comedy “Kim Convenience,” that inspired the current hit CBC-TV series, from Feb. 8th to Feb. 25th, opening   Feb. 9th.  Paul Sun-Hyung Lee returns to star as Papa.

The series attracted an average of 933,000 viewers an episode in its first season this year.  Season Two is now in pre-production.  The show is produced by Thunderbird and Soulpepper with the CBC.

Then, “Of Human Bondage” returns, Soulpepper’s winner of Seven Dora Mavor Moore Awards including Outstanding Production, New Play, Direction, Design and Ensemble.  It’s Vern Thiessen’s adaptation, based on the classic novel of W. Somerset Maugham, and directed by Soulpepper founder Albert Schultz.  It begins previews Feb. 23rd and runs until March 11th, opening  Feb. 24th.
