Canada’s great jazz/soul/gospel singer Jackie Richardson joins Tom Wilson, Jessica Mitchell, Liam Titcomb and David Wall to present the return of Art of Time Ensemble’s popular holiday concert “To All a Good Night” next week.

It will take place next Thursday, Dec. 15th to Saturday, Dec. 17th at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre at 8 p.m.

“`To All a Good Night’ was so much fun (last year) for audiences and performers alike,” Burashko said, “that it felt natural to make it a new tradition for Art of Time.  We’re excited to bring together phenomenal artists and great music in a concert that we’ve been looking forward to all year.”

Members of the Ensemble include violinists Stephen Sitarski and Drew Jurecka, guitarist Rob Piltch, cellist Amy Laing, percussionist Davide di Renzo and more.  Arrangements for them were commissioned from Jonathan Goldsmith, Kevin Fox, Robert Carli, Steve MacKinnon, Jim McGrath among others.

The singers will perform newly revised arrangements of “Santa Baby,” “Blue Christmas” and more.  Favorites from Art of Time’s inaugural holiday concert last year will return including the show-stopping version of John Lennon & Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas” / “War Is Over” featuring a special appearance by the Canadian Children’s Opera Company.

Other holiday songs not often heard will include a piece by Tom Waits, Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” sung in Yiddish, The Pogues’ rollicking punk Yuletide number “Fairytale of New York” and John Prine’s “Christmas in Prison.”

Some people may remember satirical songwriter Tom Lehrer’s work from last month’s concert dedicated to laughter titled “That’s Not Funny – The Art of Laughs with Toronto’s Art of Time Ensemble.”

For an added Christmas treat, the Ensemble will perform Lehrer’s holiday treat: “(I’m Spending) Hanukkah in Santa Monica.”  A sample:

“Amid the California flora

I'll be lighting my menorah

Like a baby in his cradle

I’ll be playing with a dreidl.”

Some of Toronto’s greatest jazz players (Kevin Turcotte, Mike Murley and John Johnson) will return as a big band to perform Duke Ellington’s “dazzling” version of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.”  Andrew Burashko, pianist and artistic director, will perform “Winter Wonderland” and Julian Richings wlll read various seasonal selections.
