As a child, his mother travelled annually to New York with her son, the future York University theatre grad, to see Broadway shows.

Last year, he made his Broadway debut directing the new musical “Allegiance” starring Star Trek’s George Takei and Lea Salonga, the original star of “Miss Salgon.”

Now, less than a week after the 74th anniversary of the Pearl Harbour attack that brought the USA into WW II, Canadians and Americans will be able to share Arima’s career landmark on Tuesday, Dec. 13th.  Broadcasts have been added on Saturday, Dec. 17th and the following Tuesday, Dec. 20th to accommodate ticket demand.  The musical was filmed during its Broadway engagement.

Cineplex will present it at only selected locations throughout Canada:

· Toronto - Cineplex Cinemas Yonge-Dundas & VIP

· Vancouver - The Park Theatre

· Halifax - Cineplex Cinemas Park Lane

· Ottawa - Cineplex Odeon South Keys Cinemas

· Calgary - Cineplex Odeon Eau Claire Market Cinemas

“Allegiance” played at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre from Oct. 2015 to Feb. 2016 following a world premiere at the Old Globe in San Diego where it became that theatre’s biggest box-office success in its history.  Music and lyrics are by Jay Kuo with a book by Marc Acito, Kuo and Lorenzo Thione.

About “Allegiance – The Musical”:

Straight from Broadway and loosely inspired by the true-life experiences of George Takei, “Allegiance” tells the emotional story of a family whose lives are upended by the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.

The event will feature an exclusive introduction from Takei, as well as special behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the cast and creators, including director Stafford Arima, a friend and former regular customer of Song & Script.

“Allegiance” follows one family’s extraordinary journey in this untold American story. Their loyalty was questioned, their freedom taken away, but their spirit could never be broken. Rejoice in one family’s triumphant story of hope, love, and forgiveness in this groundbreaking musical.

Inspired by true events, “Allegiance” is the story of the Kimura family, whose lives are upended when they and 120,000 other Japanese-Americans are forced to leave their homes following the events of Pearl Harbor.

Sam Kimura seeks to prove his patriotism by fighting for his country in the war, but his sister, Kei, fiercely protests the government’s treatment of her people.

But as long-lost memories are unlocked, Sam finds that it is never too late to forgive and to recognize the redemptive power of love.

An uplifting testament to the power of the human spirit, “Allegiance” follows the Kimuras as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves.

Legendary performer George Takei (Star Trek, Heroes), who was himself an internee as a child, stars alongside Tony Award®winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon, Mulan) in this enthralling and epic new musical.

"`Allegiance’ has been a passion project from the beginning," says Takei. "This deeply-moving story based on my family's experiences could not be more timely, or poignant, considering the current political climate. So many people around the globe have never heard about this dark part of our nation's history, and it is an honor and privilege for me to help tell this story, so that we can avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.

“I am deeply grateful that almost 120,000 people experienced the Broadway production during its run, an eerie reflection of the number of Japanese Americans who were directly impacted by the events depicted in `Allegiance.’

“This event will give to so many more the opportunity to experience and see this musical, which I consider my legacy."
