Coal Mine Theatre Presents

its First Holiday-Themed Show

2nd Sub-headline: A Non-Traditional Christmas Concert

By Dennis Kucherawy

Twin Peaks’ Windom Earle and Gypsy’s Mama Rose will celebrate the Yuletide season next month with “A Coal Mine Christmas:  A Non-Traditional Holiday Concert and Dramatic Reading of Welsh poet and author Dylan Thomas classic `A Child’s Christmas in Wales.”

There are 10 performances only from Dec. 13th to 23rd.

Of course, the performers are actually renowned Canadians:  actor Kenneth Welsh, known for his role in director David Lynch’s hit TV series “Twin Peaks” and Louise Pitre, Tony ® and Drama Desk ® Award-nominated singer/actress, celebrated for her universally, critically acclaimed performance in “Gypsy,” presented by the Chicago Shakespeare Festival.

Calling this show “a seasonal gift from two of Canada’s most talented performers,” Coal Mine’s press release says the show is about “Christmas memories that are happy and sad, festive and mournful, but ultimately hopeful.”

Set and lighting are designed by Steve Lucas.

About Louise Pitre:

Louise Pitre, who most recently performed in the hit Grand Theatre’s dramatic musical celebration “Joni Mitchell: River” in London, Ontario, will present a sung-through concert with songs of loss and recovery by composer/writers including John Meyer, Gypsy composer Jule Styne, Frank Loesser, Jerry Herman, Barry Manilow and more.  Chris Mounteer will accompany her on piano.

About Kenneth Welsh:

Dylan Thomas’ work has played an integral part in the life and career of Kenneth Welsh.  A multi-award-winning actor and director, Welsh first the, ironically, Welsh poet and author as a university student.  To this day, Coal Mine’s press material says, Kenneth continues to perform both the “heartwarming romantic and nostalgic” “A Child’s Christmas in Wales” and “Under Milk Wood,” a 1954 radio drama that was adapted later for stage and a 1972 film.

Welsh frequently performs the plays at many of his friends’ homes and is often a guest with the Monday Morning singers in Uxbridge.  He also presents them in many other venues throughout Canada and the USA.

About Coal Mine Theatre:

This is a new, independent venue in Toronto’s East End.  Founded by Diana Bentley and Ted Dykstra, the theatre is currently presenting its third popular season of fearlessly challenging plays produced, directed, designed and performed at the highest possible level with some of Canada’s most distinguished artists.  “Breathing Corpses,” its most recent production, directed by theatre regular David Ferry, just completed a universally acclaimed, sold-out engagement.

With less than 100 seats available per performance, the Coal Mine presents its audiences with the intimacy and excitement of the off-off Broadway experience and that of exciting storefront theatres in Chicago.
