6th Annual Global Cabaret Festival Returns to Distillery District

Soulpepper Theatre Presentation Takes Place Oct. 24th to 27th

Sophie Millman, Jackie Richardson with Micah Barnes and Molly Johnson Among Many Talented Performers

Like Thanksgiving, Hallowe’en, Remembrance Day and the trees changing color, it just wouldn’t be autumn in Toronto without the Distillery District’s Global Cabaret Festival and the Soulpepper Dance Awards. All shows will take place at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts.

The lineup looks so great you might as well bring along your sleeping bag and move in for the weekend. Here’s just a few examples: · “Rebel, Rebel – The Music of David Bowie.” With the Art Gallery of Ontario’s (AGO) acclaimed “David Bowie is” exhibition opening just this week, here’s some musical serendipity. This will be a celebration of Bowie’s classic hits as well as, as the press material promises, “some explorations and re-interpretations of his roads less travelled.” Soulpepper Resident Artist Colleen Allen, produces and is the music director. Among the performers are Russ Boswell, Davide Direnzo, Kurt Swinghammer, the Young Centre City Choir and special guests (You never know who will show up.) Oct. 25th at 7 p.m. and Oct. 26th at 4:30 p.m.

· “Oh Canada Songbook” – This is a tribute to some of Canada’s greatest singer/songwriters from Joni Mitchell to the McGarrigles. Suba Sankaran, music director and Soulpepper resident artist, produces. The cabaret features artists including Alana Bridgewater, Dylan Bell, Retrocity, the Young Centre City Choir and special guests. Oct. 24th at 7 p.m. and Oct.26 at 2 p.m.

· Jackie Richardson and Micah Barnes Together – Following their sold-out Valentine’s show at Hugh’s Room and their uplifting and hilarious “Two of a Kind” series concert at Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto in March, these two singing dynamos reunite for an intimate cabaret of soulful jazz and blues. Special guest appearances by musicians from the best of the jazz world are promised. Oct. 27th at 5:45 p.m.

· Molly Johnson and friends. Some of Canada’s first-rate jazz musicians will join the lovely Molly to perform classic standards from the American songbook with special guest Albert Schultz. Oct. 25th at 9:30 p.m.

· Sophie Millman – Dream a Little Dream. Music for the Child Inside. Following her sold-out cabaret last year, Sophie Millman returns to celebrate being a new mom. This cabaret promises to be “a joyride of jazz and children’s classics (adult style, of course) that recall those early moments when kids first encounter music: in the cosy comfort of a tiny bed, with the lights turned way down, through a mother’s voice. With Paul Shrofel on piano. Octx. 27 at 3:15 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.

· The Judgment of Paris – Here’s one for French impressionistic music lovers. It’s a mix of cabaret, history and story-telling set to the haunting, beautiful music of Ravel and Debussy as well as original songs. Set against the advent of World War I, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel compete for the love of their “proud, fickle, darling Paris.” It’s produced by Soulpepper Resident Artist Patricia O’Callaghan. Performers include Tom Allen and Lori Gemmell among others. Oct. 27th at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

These are just a few of the many cabarets and songbooks being presented.

The 2013 Soulpepper Dance Awards also will be announced that weekend as part of “Whirl,” a dance cabaret that will showcase the work of all of the nominees and party following the performance. All of the artists and festival guests are invited. It takes place Oct. 26 at 9:30 p.m.
